We all need a bit more “minimalist cool with a hint of light-hearted fun” in our lives. Don’t we? With the attitude that less is more, T from Upper Metal Class is the perfect example of how fundamentally captivating jewelry with unusual handmade designs works for your everyday wear. Pulling inspiration from imperfect cracks in the sidewalk, natural patterns and architecture, T knows how to create sleek lines and chic chains. These go-to pieces will leave you wanting more than just one.E+E: How does Portland compare to the other cities where you have worked?T: It's been about one and a half years since I moved here from Los Angeles, and it's been such a change of scenery for me. If you can imagine, I went from a fairly high-paced and constantly sunny city to living the complete opposite. It took me a minute to adjust, but I fell in love with Portland right away – even with its gloomy days. It's definitely a much more relaxed and easy-going city to work in, and the fact that it rains most of the year sort of forces me to be more of a workaholic. There are some really amazing people and things happening in this place that I would have never realized until I was able to experience living here.E+E: Talk a bit about the idea of your men's collection.T: I've been working with the idea of a men's collection since the beginning of Upper Metal Class, and I'm excited to hopefully have it launch by the end of the year. It has the same sort of style and vibe as the current jewelry, but with more of a bold masculine appeal that also translates as unisex.E+E: What are some of your most challenging designs?T: Sometimes the most challenging designs are the ones that are the least complicated.  As simple as a design may seem, it can be just as difficult to get something that is as plain as a geometric shape just right.E+E: And what's your favorite part about Portland?T: This is a tough question since I seem to have accumulated too many favorite things I love about Portland, but I'll try my best to just list a few. I love that there are designated roads to ride my bike easily throughout the City, over bridges and along the waterfront.  I love that the City is so environmentally conscious and friendly. I love the people I've met and come to know here. And my ultimate favorite is being able to indulge in the food and drink. I really commend those who truly care about what they do, because it definitely shows in every bite and every sip.  Portland is such a great place!T will be giving away a pair of beautiful earrings at the E+E's Launch Party!
