First, can you introduce yourself? My name is Marky Mark from Top Shelf Premium, out here in the Lower East Side.
How’d you get into the vintage game?I’ve been collecting vintage for like 10 years now, cause I always just try to be different, ya know what I mean? I never liked to dress like anybody else, I mean who does these days? When I was out in Santa Cruz, that’s where I picked up the ill collection. I came back to New York and needed some extra bread, so I sold a few pieces on eBay and said, ‘oh shit, people are actually responsive to this?’ So it just evolved from there. Here I am, 2 years later, wardrobing all kinds of cool people: Chromeo, Riff Raff, Macklemore, Beast Coast - working heavy in the hip-hop game.90’s seems to be the name of the game.Yeah it’s huge! That’s just been my steez, man, I grew up with this shit. When I came home in the 5th grade, what was I watching? Turtles, Cosby’s, Fresh Prince, it’s what I did. Hip-hop is my thing, and I’m heavily influenced by the music.Favorite piece in your collection? In the shop? I’m a big Polo and Tommy head. This Polo Sailing Gear actually belongs to Kirk Knight of Pro Era, we’re doing a special collection with him right now.If you want to follow me, to the hip-hop section... This Ice-T shirt, with the cops pointing the guns at him, that’s heat right there.Favorite New York rapper?Honestly, Sean Price, you guys know Sean P? He’s that dude right now man. I work with the whole Duck Down crew. Joey Bada$$ is a homie of mine, so the whole Beast Coast and Pro Era teams definitely. And there’s this homie coming up named Retchy P, under Action Bronson, and that’s what I’m talking about. If you had $100, what would you spend it on?Some Polo or some Tommy, if I could find it, some real heat! Maybe some Polo Sport. What did you want to be when you grow up?I didn’t know, man… Right now, I finally found out what I want to be. It just clicked, dude, like 2 years ago. This is my life, this is what I want to pursue and I’m just in that natural rhythm right now. The flow is just too easy. Man I did everything, from washing boats in Spain to life-guarding down in Ft. Lauderdale, working on a farm in Santa Cruz, went to college in upstate NY, I’ve done a lot of stupid shit man.I tried it all, man.
