Fall Into Fashion, which has evolved from the yearly Fashion Night Out, takes place this evening at Director's Park. Beginning at 5:30 until 7:30, there will be a fashion show every 30 mins to showcase falls best looks from local and national retailers. An on-site photo booths will create special flip-books and pedi-cabs will be waiting to whisk shoppers off to their next stop. There are also tons of sales happening around Pearl and shoppers who spend $150 or more at participating stores (while supplies last) will receive gift certificates to downtown restaurants and all are invited to enter a fundraising raffle to win a $1,500 Downtown shopping spree with proceeds benefitting Dress for Success Oregon. Finally, Dress for Success will also be accepting donations of gently used professional women’s clothing.
To get a better idea of what we will see at the show this evening, we interviewed Kevin Lennox, the stylist and producer of the fashion shows.
E+E: As fall creeps closer, what new pieces are emerging that we didn't see last year?Kevin Lennox: Well this year the shows are broken up into 3 categories: day/sportswear, day/professional, & evening. Each category has some new and interesting pieces. In sportswear we're definitely seeing more fashion combined with function, and fit is becoming more important in sportswear as well. In the professional category, there are lots of new treatments in fabrication that is very exciting. Like box cut-out white pleather, grosgrain with tweed. Techniques that are usually reserved for evening are now being incorporated into daywear. And speaking of evening, we're really living in the age of the cocktail dress. Anything below the knee is completely outdated. Look for lots of variations on Short is the new Long.
E+E: What shops will you be stopping by during the event? Any sales we shouldn't miss?KL: During the event I'll be producing all the live fashion shows in Director Park, there's five in all, which doesn't leave much time for me to go to the shops. However, if there's time afterwards I'll definitely go check out are Mojave, Macy's, Nordstrom and Bridge & Burn. I love visiting the mix of big box and local retailers we have in downtown Portland. And this year there's too many great sales and discounts to choose.
E+E: Outdoor fashion shows are our favorite! Will there be any surprises this year?KL: Well one surprise, at least for me as the fashion show producer, is the mini-heat wave we're having! It's going to be 95 degrees Wednesday and we're showing Fall/Winter. Which means lots of wool, layers and sweaty models. People don't realize how hard models have it sometimes…. ;)
