The clothing line Skim Milk first caught our attention with their tagline 'clothing for (and lifestyle of) a high class low life'. The newest collection, 'Discreet Vices' for F/W 15, combines their staple statement t-shirts as well as some long sleeve tops that looks so good you wouldn't ever want to take them off. We linked up with the owner, Josh Scholl to got the full story on all of their Discreet Vices..E+E: First off.. Skim Milk. We love the name but where did it come from?Josh Scholl: Thank you. Around 7 years ago I started a brand called Designerdrugs, but I had to change it when some suuuuuper cooooool dub stepper's who had the same name (as two words) threatened to sue me. I had a decent customer base at the time so in order to engage them (and make sure they all knew about the brand's name change), I did a "Name Calling Contest". In the contest, I had fans submit potential brand names that they thought I should change it to and if I picked their name the winner got a prize package of a bunch of t-shirts and a limo escorted pizza party with the Tandoori Knights (a King Khan side project). I picked the name Skim Milk and we had a CRAZY time that was documented by Vice contributor Todd Diederich. We trashed the limo, got kicked out of the pizza restaurant and then watched the band rip it up at their show. For some reason, the restaurant's manager frowned upon us all bonging beers in their establishment--I don't know... But, looking back on it now I'm glad it happened as I like the name Skim Milk better than Designerdrugs and those DJ's are still sucking it up while playing "music" for 13 year old girls wearing neon furry boots.
E+E: The newest line 'Discreet Vices Collection' is on point. Where did the inspiration come from?JS: Once again, thank you. Up until the SS15 Collection, Skim Milk had only been graphic t's and sweatshirts. I LOVE graphics, but I also really like clothes typically made by Scandinavian brands like Acne and Our Legacy. I like the cuts and simplicity of those brands but wanted to inject the edginess of my aesthetic into the new collection. So, Discreet Vices is the culmination of the quality fabrics and simplicity of the newer Men's Contemporary pieces yet keeping the same edgy, fun and sarcastic graphic pieces that Skim Milk is known for.E+E: What discreet vices does Skim Milk have/hide?JS: Over the last 6 months I've started to actually finish books. You know the saying "that book was so good that I just couldn't put it down"? I've never started reading a book that I couldn't put down (and leave down). Since this recent transformation where I knock out about 2 a month, I'm seeing what all this "reading" fuss is about.Oh, and I also LOVE BBQ ribs.E+E: Where do all of the 'high class low lifes' go in LA? What are the best spots to congregate?JS: Generally I like to go to parties at friend's houses or spaces. I don't really like the bougie night clubs or hotels and unfortunately, LA lacks the great dive bar scene of NYC and Chicago. For some reason bar owners think you need to have a flat screen in EVERY bar (including "dives"). When I do go out to a bar I frequent The Roost or wherever my friend Nina Tarr is spinning good music.
