A few Fridays ago, the E+E was invited to ADX to a spring line launch entitled “Straight from the Slums of ’89 and ’90”. We didn’t know what we were in for, but Mark McGinnis from The Incorporated clothing company invited us and we thought what the heck. We checked out their lookbook and was intrigued. After going to the party, drinking $1 PBRs and picking up a comfy sweatshirt we loved what they are doing.E+E: How did The Incorporated get its start? What sparked the idea?Mark McGinnis: The Incorporated was born in my sophomore year of college with two other buddies who just wanted to make some cool stuff for our friends.  I’ve always been into art and drawing, as well as fashion and felt it would be a cool way to get my art out there.  We figured out a name and a logo, started a blog and put out a few different shirt designs.  We would throw parties at random college bars and sell our shirts there, so the people could have a good time while also supporting us.  Almost four years later we are basically doing the exact same thing…

E+E: Yeah, we had a good time at ADX. Felt exactly like a college party with a little bit of an adult spin. So, what has the label been working on recently? Any big plans for summer '13?MM: We just released our new collection, “Straight from the Slums of ’89 & ’90,” so we have been pretty focused on that. Our focus is on just creating as much content as we can, so we’ve been busy making movies, doing some music projects, creating designs for smaller releases and some special projects.  This summer, we are hoping to put out a lot more movies and hopefully do another event towards August or September to release our next collection.

E+E: Where can we buy the swag?MM: The “swag” is all available on our online shop. We’ve been contacted by a few shops in Portland about future orders, but for now we are focusing on bringing people to our site to buy the stuff.  That way, you can see the whole brand and everything we are about rather than just seeing one of our shirts on a rack.

E+E: Favorite part of Portland. Let's hear something we haven't heard before.MM: The best part of Portland is the people I hang out with everyday.  I’ve run in a pretty small crew since college and we’re trying to plot our takeover of Portland.  Just hanging in SE, skating, playing music, freestyling, shooting videos, drawing, painting, doing graffiti, just being creative. And sometimes we drink… Holman’s on 28th and Burnside SE is by far the best place for that.

E+E: Any last thoughts?MM: The Incorporated is now just a clothing brand, but we hope to build it into more of a creative collective that just does a lot of cool stuff.  Our content is based on growing up in the 90’s in the Northwest: skateboarding, sports heroes, cartoons, hip hop, nature, politics, war, etc. and applying that to the world today.  We hope to continue expanding both into new types of clothing (more accessories, cut and sewn, etc.) as well as new media forms like photography, music and video. Photo Courtesy:  Max Lieberman and Andrew Shumway
