In honor of the wonderful month of Movember, we searched the interwebs for some of the best beards. We came across The Gay Beards, two best friends who decorated their beards and have a lot of Instagram fans. The two friends live in Portland and want to spread love & laughter via beard decorations. E&E got in touch with these creative gems to get the full story.
EYES & EDGE: What is the creative process for a beard design? How long does it take to come up with a design, style your beards and take photos?
The Gay Beards: Generally we come up with ideas inspired by our surroundings. Whether it's from being outside, on the Internet or even at a grocery store, we now see things as something to put in our beards rather than something you eat or put in a vase. A beard photo can take anywhere from one to a few hours to execute, if we had to put a number on it. (Picking out what to put in the beards, getting it ready, shower, grooming, putting the beard together and then finally taking the photo.)
E&E: Who started decorating their beard first? Or was it an AHA moment and you both started at the same time?
TGB: We both started decorating at the same time and it was definitely an AHA moment for us. A good friend of ours asked if he could take a few photos of us with flowers in our beards and we just loved the way they turned out that we just couldn't stop! From there we started thinking outside the flower box and started thinking of other things to put into our beards.
E&E: Has your Instagram following changed your daily life in any way? Do people recognize you off the street?
TGB: Our following has kept us motivated. The responses we get from everyone is absolutely amazing and we are truly grateful for all the support and feedback we receive. Because of that, we spend a lot of time trying new things. As far as being recognized on the street, it doesn't happen very often. It has happened a few times and every time it does, the people or person always has/have something so incredibly nice and encouraging to say and it genuinely makes our hearts smile.
E&E: Do you recreate each other's beards? Do you have help or just keep it simple in the mirror working on yourself?
TGB: It's a combination of the two. Most of the time we do our own beards in front of a mirror, but if we are somewhere without a mirror, we do each other's beards. We don't generally have help. There have been a few times we needed the extra hand, but 98% of he time, we do everything on our own.
E&E: What's your favorite hang out place in Portland?
TGB: We have a few go-to spots when we make a trip downtown (which really isn't that far, but we tend to be homebodies) but a couple of our favorite areas are NW 23rd or SE Hawthorne, if we were going to make a day of it. We basically just like to thrift and eat. A lot. :)Photos by: The Gay Beards
