When we think of Black Friday, all that comes to mind is mass chaos, huge crowds and an alarm going off at 2:00am, just to throw elbows at fellow shoppers at a department store. This year, your holiday shopping experience doesn’t even have to come close to that craziness! We got all the info from Elaine Volpe who is helping out with Little Boxes, a Black Friday weekend event designed to encourage shoppers to explore Portland’s many independent, one-of-a-kind boutiques and businesses.
E+E: What inspired Little Boxes to start last year?Elaine Volpe: Little Boxes was all Betsy's (Betsy Cross of betsy +iya) idea as a way to make Black Friday fun and showcase the amazing local shopping in Portland without the frenzy and insanity. It is an event that is not all about revenue, but rather, community, value, and relationships, especially at the local level. Ultimately we wanted to create a fun, local alternative to Black Friday with a huge prize raffle and cross-promotional discounts.E+E: How is the Little Boxes shopping event different from the typical Black Friday shopping experience?EV: Little Boxes is fun and stress-free. It's two days long (Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th). There are no crazy hours or limited-time sales. All participating stores are open 10am-7pm on both days. And the more you shop, the more you increase your chance to win from our growing list of amazing prizes, like a $600 shopping spree, an iPad, or various restaurant gift certificates.E+E: We can't wait to have an excuse to shop! How does the shopping event work?EV: Every time you visit a Little Box on those 2 days you can enter our amazing raffle. Little Box maps, listing all of the stores and prizes, will be available the week of the event. Every time you purchase something at a Little Box (at any price) you will receive a stamp on your map. That stamp will get you 10% off at the next Little Box. If you shop at more than 3 Little Boxes, you will get additional entries into the raffle. Therefore, the more you shop, the more chances you get to win a raffle prize. There are over 130 (and counting) stores participating.
