SHINE BRIGHT: MODEL HIGHLIGHT ON SABEY

Interview by: Holly Hoover
Every once in a while a rare individual crosses your path which shines as bright from within, as the glitter of their skin. Two years ago, we were blessed to cross paths and work with a bright young woman named, Sabey. A model, (and soon to be legend), making her mark in the fashion and beauty industry. The moment I met her—I knew there was something special. It was like I was watching a young Naomi in the making.
Shortly after our meeting, Sabey signed with Wilhemina in the US, Women360 in Paris and Milk Model Management in London. In just a few months she was appearing in campaigns for Kim Kardashian’s Skims and KKW Beauty, Rihana’s Fenty’s for their epic Valentine’s Day Campaign, and Baby Phat x Forever 21. She then set up shop in London where she was working with major international talent, editorials and being shot by the best photographers in the world. Then COVID-19 crept in, and Sabey headed back home to Portland, Oregon, where it all began.
Lucky for us, I had the the opportunity to chat with Sabey, as she waits out COVID-19, and catch up on her beautiful career thus far, and future plans.
EYES & EDGE: First of all, introduce yourself. Where are you from?
SABEY: Hello, my name is Sabey I am originally from Uganda. I moved to Salt Lake City and now I currently live in Oregon.
EYES & EDGE: How did you begin modeling? Tell us your story! How did it your career?
SABEY: I have always loved being in front of the camera . In 2014 I competed for Miss Africa Utah and got signed to a small agency in Salt Lake City. I did’t get lot of work , so started reaching out to photographers to shoot with, joined couple groups of models and photographers. I still wasn’t getting anywhere , so I kind of quiet and just focused on work and school.
In 2018, I decided to move to Oregon for better opportunity when I got to Oregon the first few months were hard. I didn’t know anyone here I started working 9-5. I didn’t have any friends so one day I decided to got on IG and followed a few photographers I shot with @Zair.jpg for the first time. I forgot how much I loved being in front of the camera and creating. From the day I started working with other photographers, went to couple events which is where I meet the amazing Holly & Whitney of EYES & EDGE. I love how supportive Portland community is! You gals gave me hope again when I had stopped believing in myself!
EYES & EDGE: What agency are you signed with? Do you enjoy working with your agent?
SABEY: I am signed with Williahima LA, NYC , Milk management and Women 360 Paris. Yes! I absolutely love working with my agents!
EYES & EDGE: What has been your favorite campaign to work on?
SABEY: Oh man, I have a lot , but my favorite one would have to be with this brand called Selkie, because the was my first campaign to work on before I got signed. When I first got signed to Wilhelmina I booked Saveage X Fenty — Literally dream come true!!
EYES & EDGE: Before COVID what were you working on & where were you living?
SABEY: Before COVID, I was working and living in London currently shooting on magazine editorial campaigns for Chanel Jewellery for Hunger Magazine issue 18.
EYES & EDGE: Who is your dream brand to work with?
SABEY: My Dream Brand to work with would have to be brands that are Diverse & Inclusive
EYES & EDGE: Tell us some story from on set. Anything wild happen that the camera didn’t catch?
SABEY: I have only been working professionally for 8 months so I don’t have any crazy stories the happened on set.
EYES & EDGE: Give us some advice. What would you tell yourself as a young girl?
SABEY: My advice is don’t give up even when it seems like what your doing is not enough , because trust me it is. I would tell my younger self to love her skin and her body and to never stop believing in herself
