EYES & EDGE: Who are you, what is your name, and where are you from?
TYLER SPANGLER: My name is Tyler Spangler and I am a freelance graphic designer from Seattle, Washington. I grew up surfing and drawing on surfboards. I went to school for psychology and also went to art school for 1 year before dropping out. I ran a punk venue for 13 shows before art school and I have been freelancing since 2013.
E&E: What diff forms of art of do you create or indulge in? Are you a dancer, maker, painter, etc? What do you call your art form/ art forms. How did you get started doing what you are doing?
TYLER: I work primarily in Photoshop. I would describe my art as a mix between pop art, surrealism, and dada. I got started by making album covers and flyers for bands and eventually
E&E: What inspires you or drives you? What gets you out of bed each day? Are there any particular art forms that you consider to be highly influential in your work?
TYLER: I am inspired by music, surfing, and cooking. I am stoked to check my emails for new client opportunities and to make new work. I was/am really inspired by pop art, collage, typography, and screen printing.
E&E: Who inspires you ( past or present heroes/heroines). Why do they inspire you?
TYLER: I was most inspired by Ozzie Wright (surfer) because he used to draw the coolest cartoon-like illustrations on his surfboard. I was also inspired a lot by George Carlin, John Baldessari, and Barbara Kruger.
E&E: What are your rituals that keep you on track? Self-care rituals, meditations, etc.—any and all that keep you feeling recharged and stoked.
TYLER: I feel on track when I am on my computer listening to music. It is a meditative practice that allows me to get in the right frame of mind to create artwork.
E&E: How do you handle challenges I.E. creative blocks, or even bigger challenges like the one we are facing worldwide- how do you keep on track with your art and your mission?
TYLER: I just force myself to make stuff. If I only created when I was in the mood than I wouldnt make stuff very often. I think its important to make it a ritual instead of when you are "inspired".
E&E: How do you want your art to affect the world and other people? How do you want people to feel when they experience your art? What do you want them to take away from it ?
TYER: I want people to feel inspired, motivated, humored, and in a more introspective and curious mood after seeing it.
E&E: What does an “ideal-utopian world", look like to you? How do people live, how do people interact with each other and the planet?
TYLER: Everyone gets enough money from the government every month to pay for survival (housing, food, healthcare) and all of their free time could be spent on passion projects to better themselves or the world. Not sure how this could play out but that is my utopia.
E&E: What steps are you taking and are willing to make this world a better place , transmute the darkness and turn it into light?
TYLER: Share my experiences through art in a colorful and honest way. Also to be open and helpful to any questions people have about artwork or advice they might need about a career in art.
E&E: If you could go back in time and give your younger self advice, what would it be?
TYLER: I got the advice I needed when I first started and I still remind myself of it everyday. "Make something new everyday and stay true to yourself".
E&E: Words to live by. What are some quotes that have stuck with you or influence your life? Any words of wisdom for us?
TYLER: Make something new everyday and There is always someone out there that likes who you are so dont try and be someone else.
E&E: What are a few of your favorite things? Colors, tastes, smells, foods, places—take us there
TYLER: Pink color, sweet taste, salt water ocean smell, ramen, Coeur D' Alene Lake, and Rincon Point.
E&E: Share a coincidence or a funny thing that happened to you that really reaffirmed that you are/were on the right path.
TYLER: The whole time I was getting a degree in psychology I was making artwork during class and making flyers in my free time.
E&E: Where can we stay plugged into what you’re up to?
