Back in 2011, Theron Humphrey quit his job, adopted a dog and hit the road. He wanted to create something beautiful that he was proud of and with the money from his backed Kickstarter campaign, he was in business. During his tour, he noticed a strange yet endearing quality about his new pup. She was really good at standing on objects. So, as the two traveled around the 50 states, Theron captured Maddie a top various locations. Fast forward. Theron is on his second tour across the US on a book tour of a collection of his photos of Maddie. As he tours, he has been documenting stories from people who have rescued dogs, just like he did, to raise awareness on adopting animals.Best part about the book tour? He will be in Portland TONIGHT! Stop by Broadway Books at 7pm!
E+E: Maddie seems to have a pretty good sense of humor. Is there anything she does that really makes you laugh?Theron Humphrey: Maddie is such a good sport. She is always up for photos and adventure, she never wakes up in a bad mood. That's a big reason why I think we keep dogs around. They are solid reminders to be grateful for this life a bit more. But I catch myself laughing the most when Maddie is holding a treat for a few seconds and starts drooling

E+E: As you travel the 50 states again, has there been a big difference between your 2011 tour and the tour you are currently on?TH: I thought this year was going to be way more laid back, slower paced really. When I started I felt like only committing to 50 stories vs. 365 stories I did last year was gonna be way easier ya know? But what ended up happening is we have 1 bookstore a week in nearly every state and then have to find and schedule a story to shoot for Why We Rescue and by the time we get both of those done the next tour stop is the next day. And we've been doing that for the past 7 months. But hey! Don't take it as me complaining, this year has been incredible and I wouldn't trade it.

E+E: Do you ever see your adventures going outside the 50 states?TH: Yep! It's hard for me to plan ahead these days but we have an adventure around Mexico in the works for early 2014
E+E: On your Kickstarter that kicked off your first adventure back in 2011, if someone pledged more than $500 you would tattoo their name on your leg. 8 people made the list. Do you have 8 names on your leg today?TH: I do! I followed through with that reward. I have 8 names tattooed right on my leg. Most days I forget I have it but once in awhile I'll see it when I'm wearing shorts and I'll smile.
E+E: Finally, anything you are excited to do or see in Portland?
TH:I'm totes gonna eat a Pine State biscuit. I had one last year and it was so good.Photos courtesy: Theron HumphreyFor more pictures of Maddie the Coonhound, check out Theron's Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
