SEEK THE UNIQUE

Seek the Unique could technically be characterized as a vintage furniture store, but that wouldn’t even begin to cover the dynamic, ever-evolving space. Comprised of a furniture showroom and workshop, Seek the Unique is a one-stop shop for all things beautiful and rare. It’s like going to the world’s best flea market, as owner Andrea Jones has already done the dirty work of weeding out the junk (or refinishing it), leaving you with only the true gems.

Seek the Unique is also home to a variety of innovative events (like a hootenanny and a dog food cookbook launch party), most notably, the monthly supper club.  For $35 per person, guests sit at communal tables and eat from a menu that’s based on a different theme each month. It’s a great way to meet new people and learn about various cuisines. It’s definitely an amazing experience! We visited Seek the Unique and got to know Andrea a little better. We also fell in love with her two adorable pups, Cotton and Amber, who hang out all day in the store.E+E: Where are you from?Andrea: I actually grew up in Oregon. I lived in Seattle for almost 15 years, and then I moved back down here.E+E: What brought you back to Portland?Andrea: My husband. He was living here while I was in Seattle, so we did the commute for a year and a half. There are parts about Seattle that I miss; I miss the water terribly. I think we have more grey days here than up in Seattle. But other than that, I’m happy to be back here. We have children, and my parents are here, so it’s really for the best.E+E: How long have you had this space?Andrea: We just had our 3-year anniversary. We originally opened as an auction house, but after a year of doing that, we basically threw the whole business plan away and started focusing more on the furniture business.E+E: Where do you find your pieces?Andrea: Everywhere! Flea markets, auctions, garage sales, estate sales.E+E: Has anything strange or wacky ever happened here?Andrea: Well, a couple got married here once. They were going to get married in a park down the street, but they didn’t know that it was under construction, so they asked if they could get married here. It was like totally impromptu in the middle of afternoon. We actually had an arch made out of wood at the time, so it was perfect!Mark your calendars! Seek the Unique is having an open house on November 3rd. Showroom renovations, special collections, live music, drinks and good company are all in store for the evening.Seek the Unique931 SE 6th AvenuePortland, OR 97214503.208.2580Written by: Lauren Kodiak
