Capitol Hill Block Party (CHBP) July 19th-21st 2019: The Best Weekend of the Summer
A festival that once started as a charming-neighborhood get-together has morphed into a jammed packed (we mean this literally) event, featuring top 40-headliners and Seattle's hottest up and coming artists into one heavy weekend event in the Pacific Northwest. This year, photographer Jalen DeWitt and writer Astrid Angell, embarked on a weekend quest to the charming city of Seattle, to see what the "best weekend of the summer" is actually all about.
This year's event was kicked off by artists such as indie-heartbreak queen Mitski, dance/electronic mastermind Big Wild, and the creative American music duo Phantogram. These main acts paired alongside smaller performers: Illuminati Hotties, Red Ribbon, and Peach Pit kicked off the perfect start to an unforgettable weekend on the blocks.
Day two swung around and was quickly filling up with fans eager to see bodacious bop queen Lizzo. On a Saturday in the middle of the summer, the vibes and heat were quickly turning up as artists like Saba, Chelsea Cutler, and A Tribe Called Red pasted through the stages. The electronic duo, Snakehips put on a gripping performance that emulated the venue and set the tone perfectly before the self-love queen Lizzo came on and set the night on fire with hits like "Truth Hurts", "Jerome", and "Cuz I Love You."
The final day of CHBP was def one for books and an ode to the Pacific Northwest since acts like indie rock band STRFKR and American rapper Amine, best known for his hit "Caroline", are native to the Portland metropolitan area. Trap and bass music producer RL Grime, finished the weekend off with a performance filled with high energy, heavy bass lines, and catchy beats, that left attendees excited and even more stocked for next year.
